About Mike Dougherty

Mike with CharThe future has always defined me. After graduation from the University of California – Davis in 1987 with a BA in Political Science, I joined the financial services industry, and for the next 18 years, I worked contentedly for and with the big names – American Century, American Express, GT Global, AXA/Equitable and ING. – helping others plan their financial futures as a public speaker and educator about investment markets and products.

In May 2005, I was forty years-old and married Jennie, the love of my life – life had no bounds.

Plan for adversity. In March, I was diagnosed with a very rare cancer of the salivary gland. By April, we discovered the cancer had spread to my lungs and the nodules in my lungs were “too numerous to count.” There were no good options, but as U.S. Marine Corp icon “Chesty” Puller said, “We’re surrounded. That simplifies things.”

In May 2006, thoracic surgeons attacked the largest nodules and I began blogging about my journey with cancer – mainly for family and friends and later for those who found hope and inspiration in my story. In July, they attacked the enemy with radiation therapy for six weeks. In September, thoracic surgeons attacked again – the ten largest nodules – elation, only four were cancerous. In November, I began two months of chemotherapy.

May 2007, all clear. The corner was turned and in August a baby was born! Charlotte Hope Dougherty was brought into the world. Named Charlotte, after the oncologist who saved my life; Hope, because with hope, anything is possible.

September 2007, new buggers came back. No worries, they were expected and immediately zapped with a Cyberknife in November. By April 2008, one remained, and we zapped him too.

In 2011, I was offered a seat on the Head & Neck Cancer Steering Committee of the National Cancer Institute. What did I have to offer? Well, clichés are used for a reason – because they’re true and bring us back to what’s really important.mike fishing
