One year ago today Mike had to go. He didn’t want to. But he did, with courage and humor and dignity. And he left beautiful memories, friends, family, and an amazing legacy. Mike was full of energy, hope, laughter, warmth, adventure, optimism, pride, gratitude and forward momentum at all times. He was brave. He was also opinionated, passionate, sometimes judgmental and none too patient. He had incredible grit and perseverance. He was fun, hard to keep up with (even when he felt horrible) and not always easy (regardless of how he was feeling). And I miss it all, every bit. The more time that...

On November 2, Mike wrote in his blog, “Some day soon I expect to do something great.” He was right.
On Tuesday, January 21, Mike won. He ended his 8-year fight with cancer and left us a life lived with passion, incomparable courage, unending optimism, love, and laughter to the very last minute.
But not before he finished a book,
Inspired many, taught us all a thing or two
Told his wife all that needs to be told and squeezed a lifetime full of love into his daughter’s hand.
No stone unturned, no treatment untried
He didn’t leave us in spirit, ever. And not with a quote from Plato or a...

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! As Mike has stated in many blog updates, love your kids and be thankful for every day we have here on earth.
Mike hasn’t felt well enough to update the blog for awhile so Jen asked me to do a quick post. Mike has spent the past 2 weeks in Seattle’s Swedish First Hill ICU. He was admitted on Monday December 16th due abdominal pain, edema and low oxygen saturation. His vitals now are more stable than when he was first admitted. As he fights to build back his strength and stamina, please keep him in your thoughts and...

Phew…fortunately you didn’t get the boilerplate “so long, farewell” blog update from me. But, to be brutally honest, it almost was. To make a long story short, a couple of weeks ago, the night of 10/17 to be exact, I pulled the typical “Mike Dougherty dumb dumb move.”
Backing up a little, for the last 3 months, I have needed to sleep with oxygen at night, which has typically not been a problem. So the night of the 17th went...
